Memphis is joining the growing list of Amazon facility locations as the online retail giant continues to expand operations throughout the nation. Amazon’s presence in Memphis means an increase of 1500 jobs to Memphis and surrounding Shelby County. Two Memphis Locations
Amazon invested $70 million in construction of a new receives center and another $10 million in renovating an existing warehouse for a sortation center. The two centers perform separate functions:

The receives center will employ 575 workers who will take in freight and repackage goods for shipment to Amazon fulfillment centers.

Amazon describes sortation centers as “the intersection between transportation and logistics.” The sort centers serve as midway station between fulfillment centers and customers.
The Memphis receives center and the sortation center are approximately two miles apart. With a total investment of more than $80 million in both facilities, Amazon has demonstrated their commitment to a long presence in the city.
Jobs with Benefits
There are part-time and full-time positions available. Full-time employees receive health care benefits their very first day. Other benefits for full-time employees include up to 20 weeks paid parental leave and a 401 (k) savings plan. Amazon offers a Career Choice program for hourly employees. This program pre-pays 95 percent of tuition costs for employees pursuing courses for in-demand fields. This benefit applies regardless if the education and skills acquired are relevant to an Amazon career.
Amazon recently announced an increase of its U.S. minimum wage to $15 per hour. The new wage is set to go into effect November 1, 2018 and will apply to full-time, part-time, seasonal, and temporary employees.
Economic Impact
A large economic development project—like that of Amazon—strengthens community development.
